ARIZONAToday, a bipartisan group of current and former elected officials launched the Democracy Defense Project in Arizona. Democracy Defense Project will work to defend the transparency, safety, security and validity of Arizona’s elections system and restore voter confidence. Former Governor Jan Brewer, Congressman Matt Salmon, Yuma County Supervisor Jonathan Lines and former legislator Daniel Hernandez will serve as board members.

At a time when America’s confidence in the state of our elections and democracy has significantly eroded, Democracy Defense Project brings together trusted leaders to bolster faith in the integrity of our elections system. Designed to serve as a counterweight to attempts to undermine and sow distrust in election integrity, the Democracy Defense Project’s board members will speak up when these instances arise and publicly defend those who have sworn to uphold the rule of law regardless of party or outcome.

Former Congressman Matt Salmon, a fierce advocate of upholding the rule of law and conservative values, will serve on the Board of Directors and spearhead initiatives in Arizona to preserve election integrity, foster greater confidence in election results, and improve voter participation across the state.

“Throughout my tenure serving the people of Arizona in various capacities, I have never encountered an era more critical than now to combat misinformation about our election system,” said Salmon. “The cornerstone of our nation is free and fair elections, something Arizona has done well for decades and continues to do. It is important that every voter in Arizona has confidence in the system and exercises their right to vote this election cycle. I look forward to working Governor Brewer, Supervisor Lines and former Representative Hernandez on this critical effort.”

The organization will use earned and paid media to run a national campaign to raise awareness of efforts to subvert elections across the country and help move us beyond polarizing rhetoric.

Democracy Defense Project’s Board of Directors include distinguished leaders with service at the federal, state and local levels; the group’s founding Board members include:

  • Gov. Nathan Deal (R-GA)
  • Gov. Ed Rendell (D-PA)
  • Gov. Brian Sandoval (R- NV)
