WASHINGTON – Democracy Defense Project national spokesperson Margaret Hoover issued the following statement regarding the status of California’s ballot counting:

“Nearly two weeks after Election Day, two key U.S. House races in California remain uncalled. Conducting elections judiciously and ensuring every vote is counted is imperative, although delays, such as the situation in the Golden State, sows distrust in the electoral process and its integrity. Americans deserve a transparent, swift and accurate vote counting process. Determining the outcome of the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate or other key races should not hang in the balance due to slow vote tabulation in one state. While we know the system works, speed and accuracy belong hand-in-hand, and significant delays lead to American’s doubting if the system can be trusted.

Democracy Defense Project urges California election administrators to expedite the ballot counting process and thanks election workers for their commitment to an accurate and expeditious vote counting process. Further, we encourage California leaders to work with their colleagues across the nation to learn best practices, analyze existing procedures, and pursue commonsense changes to speed up the vote counting process moving forward,” said Margaret Hoover, Democracy Defense Project national spokesperson.
