OHIO – A bipartisan collection of former elected officials have helped to launch the Democracy Defense Project in Ohio and several other states. Democracy Defense Project will work to defend the transparency, safety, security and validity of Ohio’s elections system. Former Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell (R-OH) and former United States Congressman Zack Space (D-OH) will serve as board members of the Democracy Defense Project in Ohio.

At a time when America’s confidence in the state of our elections and democracy has significantly eroded, Democracy Defense Project brings together trusted leaders to bolster our faith in the integrity of our elections system. Designed to serve as a counterweight to attempts to undermine and sow distrust in election integrity, Democracy Defense Project’s board members will speak up when these instances arise and publicly defend those who have sworn to uphold the rule of law in our constitutional republic.

As members of Democracy Defense Project’s Board of Directors, Blackwell and Space will spearhead initiatives in Ohio to preserve election integrity, foster greater confidence in election results and improve voter participation across the state.

“As someone who took an oath to protect our elections, I want all voters to know and believe Ohio has a strong, bipartisan election system that safeguards every eligible voter’s right to vote and their right to not have that ballot negated by an unlawful vote,” said Blackwell. “Sadly, I’ve seen members of both major political parties spew dangerous rhetoric when challenging election results, and if someone tries that in 2024, we’re going to call them out on it.”

“Defending and protecting free and fair elections is not a partisan issue, and every voter should feel confident that Ohio’s election system is transparent, safe and secure,” added Space. “Baseless claims made for political gain that seek to undermine trust in our strong election process are reckless, and I look forward to doing all I can to support the Ohioans – both Democrat and Republican – who work tirelessly to ensure our elections are lawfully carried out.”

Democracy Defense Project’s full Board of Directors includes distinguished leaders with service at the federal, state and local levels.

The organization will use earned and paid media to run a campaign to raise awareness of efforts to subvert elections across the country and help move us beyond polarizing rhetoric.

The group’s founding Board members include:

  •  Gov. Jan Brewer (R-AZ)
  • Gov. Nathan Deal (R-GA)
  • Gov. Brian Sandoval (R-NV)
  • Gov. Ed Rendell (D-PA)
  • Gov. Roy Barnes (D-GA)
  • Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA)
  • Sen. John Sununu (R-NH)
  • Ambassador Richard Swett (D-NH)
